If you have diabetes, it is important that you have a diabetic eye exam on a periodic basis, as recommended by our eye doctor, Dr. Paul Heeg. You can visit our vision practice, Clear Eye Center, where you can have a complete
eye exam in Grapevine TX and be sure that diabetes is not ruining your good vision.
Patients with diabetes run the risk of developing vision problems if the sugar level in their bloodstream is not kept under control. When you come to our vision practice for a comprehensive eye exam in Grapevine TX, our optometrist will view the retina and blood vessels at the back of your eye, to ensure that you are not developing diabetic retinopathy. There are actually several different kinds of diabetic retinopathy all which can lead to vision loss if left untreated. When a patient has proliferative diabetic retinopathy, abnormal new blood vessels will form and grow around the retina. These blood vessels are weak and are prone to bleed. This can result in small specks or large floaters developing which can obscure the patient’s vision. If there is a large hemorrhage in the eye, the patient’s vision may become blurred. When these blood vessels bleed and leak fluid into the eyes, scarring can occur which can be permanently damaging to your vision. Diabetic retinopathy can be found during a regular eye exam during which our optometrist is able to view your retina at the back of your eye with an ophthalmoscope. If our optometrist sees that you have developed diabetic retinopathy, extra tests may be ordered to determine the extent of the disease. These tests can involve injection of a dye into a vein so that photos can be taken of the retina. The best way to make sure that diabetic retinopathy does not develop is to maintain strict control of your blood sugar levels. It is also important that your blood pressure remains at a safe level. Laser therapy can prevent additional vision loss.
