In the United States, diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in people under the age of 65. While it can cause cataracts and glaucoma, diabetes can cause the devastating eye disease known as Diabetic Retinopathy. Diabetic Retinopathy is a complication of diabetes involving abnormal blood vessels which nourish the retina of the eye. As part of our diabetic screening process, we will perform a comprehensive eye exam that includes a visual acuity test, pupil dilation, and careful examination of your retina.
Diabetes affects nearly every aspect of a person’s health, but its impact on vision is often overlooked until it’s too late. High blood sugar levels can damage the delicate blood vessels in the retina, leading to a condition called diabetic retinopathy—one of the leading causes of vision loss among adults.
